Instant Messaging

I have used instant messaging quite a bit. When my son was away at college it was an easy way to keep in touch and when he spent a year in Spain, we could still communicate frequently by instant messaging. And it is free so we didn't have lots of expensive international phone calls!

I also work at the Elgin Community College Library where we provide IM reference service using Meebo so students can contact us from a variety of IM services. We don't get many questions but we are seeing an increase.

I think we could try IM reference in Youth Services. It doesn't require any special equipment and signing up for Meebo as well as the other IM services is easy. The hardest part would be publicizing our new service!

Yea, getting the word out is probably the trickiest part. I've been thinking about re-working the Computer Center welcome page that all the customers see when they sign in to include some of the Web 2.0 stuff we've been talking about.
